Bijoux, Daughter of the legendary courtesan, Marion Delorme While I am not usually a fan of historical romance, indeed bodice-rippers are a genre to be avoided like the plague in my opinion, I must admit to being totally charmed and delighted by Milady Bijoux, Marquise de Cinq-Mars, and her admirable 17th century tell all. And I do mean all.

A love story, a Greek tragedy set in the early years of the opulent reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, a complex mystery with the secret of alchemy and the true nature of vampirism as twin maguffins, all of these ingredients are blended seamlessly into that most rare of historical fictions - a work that actually sheds some light on the era in which it is set. The tone is witty and insightful, even when the purple prose and passionate formality of the time threatens to overwhelm the unfamiliar reader. Bijoux guides us, teases us, confesses to us, all the while holding the secret close to those heaving bosoms right to the very last page.

All in all, a truly delightful read, one that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the esoteric underground of the era. In fact, more can be learned from Mlle. Bijoux concerning these subjects than from reading a whole shelf full of more pedantic and scholarly works.
