Meanwhile, out in the garden, Ms. Madeline approached
Olivia who was
lighting a clove cigarette.
"I have to go," Madeline announced in a rather abrupt manner. "I can't
stay here any longer with that jackass about. Carlos is a criminal, Olivia...stay away from him, do you hear me? He and Fichon kidnapped you -
Lexi and Duke really helped save you...hey, let's call the boys and all meet up in Gisors this afternoon. We could go back to the Three Fish for lunch and then maybe go
visit some châteaux there and poke about."
"Duke's gone, so bye-bye," Olivia remarked coldly, flicking a glowing ash to the ground while Domenico's Medusa ring glittered in the morning sunlight, making her want to cry from loneliness. "Give me a call next time you're in town - until then Don Juan Carlos will keep me company, I'm sure. Oh, and thanks for rescuing me."
"But I rescued you," JC interrupted, as he took his place
between
the two women, hoping to become a human wedge.
"Try rescuing yourself, next time," the librarian muttered, completely vexed by the bothersome intrusion.
"Someday you'll want me, Ms. Madeline," the Jackal winked, raising a shiny piece of the Peyton's cutlery
into the air, "for I possess the Fork! The Fork of Pythagoras, which points to all portals of esoteric distinction. I can kill a man at ten paces with a paper clip, you know!"
"Really?" Olivia quizzed the charlatan while Maddie stomped off, too sad and peeved for words to describe.
