The Unknown Masterpiece
by Honoré de Balzac

In the late 1800s, a story by the famous French writer and esoteric thinker, Honoré de Balzac, was translated into English. A story in two parts, the text has been lost largely in the Balzac anthologies published over the last 100 years. What you are about to read was limited in its day to 1000 copies and very few are known to survive. The following rendition of The Unknown Masterpiece (sometimes titled Gillette) was carefully edited and contains the exact grammar and punctuation as presented by the original translators.
The Cybersybils are proud to present both Parts One and Two of the tale that tormented Picasso: The Unknown Masterpiece.

View the works of Mabuse, supposedly the master of the mysterious painter, Frenhofer, portrayed in Balzac's tale of obsessive creativity - which raises the question: to whom did the painter Poussin owe his skill/knowledge? Who was Frenhofer?
