Venus Aphrodite was born
on the island of Crete and
Aphrodite, shivering, cold, and emerging from the foam of
the sea,
one can hear her teeth chattering
the virginal goose pimples
that completely cover her naked body
and those who are there to see the birth of Venus
pick up shells
and clap them together to accent
the chattering of Aphrodite's teeth
And at that moment
the myth moves from Crete to Spain
and those shells
- which according to tradition were made
of porcelain, when things become liturgical -
were made out of wood in Spain.
That's why castanettes
are called 'crotalos' in Spanish
meaning that they came from Crete.
So when you see Spanish dancers
with castanettes
the noise is nothing more than
the chattering of Aphrodite's primitive teeth at birth
when she was completely covered
by those first congenital goose pimples
And at that very moment
the Milky Way
- which is the most erogenous of them all
being the track of a goddesses breast who showers the sky
who sprinkles the sky with milk -
that Milky Way, stretching off and far beyond
is no longer called the Milky Way but
the Santiago Road
